Purple Irises

The scientific name, Iris, is widely used as a common name for all Iris species. These bearded rhizomatous irises are the typical showy flowers. The word iris takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, as well as the name for the Greek goddess of the rainbow or Iris. Historically, purple irises were planted over the graves of women to summon the Goddess to guide the dead on their journey. One of the earliest artworks of an iris is a fresco, which was painted about 2100BC, in king Minos’ palace in Crete.

It was part of an indigenous fishery or tribal fishing area (Warm Springs, Yakama, Umatilla, and Nez Perce tribes) that was flooded to create the Dalles Dam. This painting is a recreation or what the 2008 sonar survey showed.

Description of work:

Celilo Falls(also known as Horseshoe Falls) was located on the Columbia River. It was part of an indigenous fishery or tribal fishing area (Warm Springs, Yakama, Umatilla, and Nez Perce tribes) that was flooded to create the Dalles Dam. This painting is a recreation or what the 2008 sonar survey showed. Sonar signal strength is used to paint higher or lower intensity colors. The colors are depicted on a color spectrum with the strongest returns depicted bright Yellow, medium returns depicted Red, and the weakest returns depicted Blue. The sonar results indicate that Celilo Falls remains intact and is buried under the waters of the Columbia River above the Dalles Dam. The painting of the sonar shows the channels of the river, The rocky outcroppings, and the basins of the river bed.
